What is a Martyr to do when the lads are off in foreign climes?

Mmm, a conundrum. DMFM recommends visiting the Willows to take in Troedyrhiw's match against Seven Sisters. Travel to the capital village of the Plymouth Ward is easy, try either a 81 bus from stand 10 of Merthyr Bus Emporium or even risk the Arriva train from Merthyr Central to Troedyrhiw General, en route to the stadium why not sample a beer or two in the Ex-servicemans Club? A proper workingmens club serving good beer at affordable prices, post-match munchies could be sated at the Pak Ho chip shop on the square before heading north back to Merthyr to celebrate that win at Cambridge.

For those of a more cultural persuasion we recommend heading west to Jackland to see the Ray Cooney farce “Run for your Wife” at the Grand Theatre. There’s nothing like a good farce after all.

For those of you just fancy a few beers why not head to the Mumbles & Swansea Bay Beer Festival running at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea from 21-23 August. Entry is just £5 and the drinks are available between 12 noon and 11pm. At the cider stalls we’re advised that the perry is very well received.

Or you could just head to the Rhondda to cheer on the plucky lads from the Brunswick as they compete in the FAW Trophy for the first time!

But if you change your mind and fancy the journey to Cambridge then why not give young Richard a tinkle on 07852 950486, there’s a charabanc trip to be enjoyed!

Whatever you decide, remember ……. Choose wisely!!

Ferndale in the Rhondda. A Saturday afternoon in August. FC Brunswick, probably the lowest ranked football team in the FAW Trophy, face Ferndale Boys Club of the South Wales Amateur League. A daunting task you may think but not for the brave lads of the Brunswick. The pre-match meal of bacon sandwiches in their home pub under their belts it was soon down to business on the excellent Maerdy park pitch. The broad canvas of the pitch appreciated by the football skills of the underdogs. Could they do it? Could they pull off an unlikely result? Alas no, but not without scaring their higher level opponents. The Brunswick boys found themselves 2-0 up at the break with Batesy and Matt scoring to shock the hosts. Could they hold on? A quick response by the Ferns looked ominous but 2 quick Mike Murphy goals had the visitors dreaming of the 1st round. However injuries to team captain Adam, influential midfielder Noddy and hardworking full back Spud had the lads defending deeper and deeper as the game neared the end. 4-1 with 10 minutes to go, but football is a cruel game and the plucky minnows faced extra time after 3 late goals for the relieved hosts. Into extra time and a penalty saved by Dai in the Brunswick goal only for the rebound to be slammed home. By then the outsiders had been reduced to 10 players after veteran Lee Tregonning limped off. Another penalty, the dismissal of the keeper and the final score of 8-4 flatters the Ferndale club. But thats football and good luck to them on the road to the Final! Foe me, it was a great game to watch, end to end stuff, and FC Brunswick were a credit to Merthyr. Now they get to concentrate on the League.

I was actually there when he came up with the name. It was Walsall v's Sunderland in '88 and we were talking with the Editor of the new Sunderland Fanzine, Wise Men Say.. “Badges, we don’t need no stinking badges!” is one of the best lines in the classic Mel Brooks movie Blazing Saddles but we all need badges, don’t we? Something personal that shows both who or what we support and what our values are to the outside world. I wore this Merthyr Tydfil AFC badge on the lapel of my Vaynor & Penderyn school blazer every day I was in that fine establishment of learning. I probably wore it firstly because the chance of getting any MTFC merchandise in that era was virtually nil. The club shop operated out of the tea hut at the end of the grandstand and it was never open in the seventies and when those wooden boards were ever open then every kid in the ground would flock there to buy anything available but it was always the same stuff – key-rings, rosettes and badges. So even a badge was a rarity and such a rare item could never be allowed to rest somewhere in a drawer to be lost in some clear out years later. It had to be shown off, it was a family heirloom

I’m probably being a bit harsh with the title, as at the beginning of the 2022/23 I would have taken a mid table spot. Unfortunately, due to this new manager in charge, a certain Mr Paul Michael, he has definitely changed supporters expectations, and not making the play offs seemed strangely disappointing. Something I don’t think any of us were thinking about in August 2022. I’ll let you into a little secret, after the year when the club mothballed due to the pandemic, I was thinking of jacking it in. The message came from nowhere, and as an owner, at the time I was really narked that no one had given me the chance to have a say, what is the point of being an owner? Looking back, it was obviously the right decision, at the time being stuck in, no pubs open and Pingus zoom quizzes had an adverse impact on my mental health, and looking forward to watching a bit of football was a light at the end of the tunnel.
